Trivia/Info

This song is the voice of one boozer pleading with another to keep their scene together: "I'll take back my pinata, it's wasted on you / just spinning that pool cue all over the room / and give back the blindfold that's under your shoe."
  • In an interview with Westzeit, John Linnell said: "'Drink!' isn't a drinking song; it's about people who have a problem with that." On the topic of "interesting songs" written by the band, both John Linnell and John Flansburgh would expand on the meaning of "Drink!" in an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio:
JF: It's [a] very tightly written [song] and the lyrics come very fast and furious, but it's basically about two guys out on [the] town on a real bender. It's a song for alcoholics; it's about alcoholism in its truest, most desperate, dire form.

JL: It neither condones, nor condemns the behavior of [drinking].
JF: Yeah, but I think it has the manic qualities of that kind of lifestyle choice that's hard to sum up, because I think one of the things about all forms of addiction that generally get ignored is that there actually is an excitement to it. I mean there's a reason that people do it and that's 'cause it's really exciting. It's not just kind of exciting, it's actually crazy exciting. So it's really about that, but obviously it's a very desperate and kind of dire song as well.

  • In live performances, the audience is often asked to shout "Drink! Drink!" back (usually split in two and instructed to shout successively) after each time the word "drink" is sung. In some cases, the show is set up intervention-style, and the audience is asked to shout back "No, wait!" after each time "drink" is sung, as seen here.
