Listen vs. Download[edit]

Listen makes more sense since some of the links are to RealAudio files, which you don't technically download but stream. Sorry, I meant to get the change in with the one that replaced MP3.AaronSw 11:49, 15 Mar 2005 (EST)

Special Page[edit]

You may have noticed Wikipedia's random page search link on the left of their site. The same affect can be acheived here using [[1]] (try it!). This link added to our left navigator would be a fun addition to the site, and it would provide idlers with a means to explore parts of the wiki they wouldn't normally find. This promotes a healthy presentation of fresh material to some blocked minds, furthing the greatness of the wiki. On top of that, Wikipedia binds this link to Alt-X to expedite random page viewing.

The code is already there; all you have to do is add the link to the left navigator frame. How convenient! -- TheBlunderbuss 19:38, 14 Apr 2005 (EDT)

I actually removed the link...it used to be there, but i removed it, to make room for the categories and mp3 links...If there's a high-enough demand, I can add it back... --Duke33 23:31, 14 Apr 2005 (EDT)

Search Plugin[edit]

Alternatively, one can use a keyword search.

You open the site, right click on the search bar, click Add a Keyword Search..., name it, and then pick a string to separate it from other keyword searches.

For example, you could put the string as "tmbg" for this site and "imdb" for imdb.com. When you enter this into the address bar, followed by a space, you can input directly into those searches.

Also, if there are more options to the form by way of, say, a pull-down menu, the effects change. If an imdb person keyword search is desired, select the People option from the pull=down menu, add the Keyword search (eg "imdbppl") and you've separated the general search from the people search!

I think this method is faster and better than a pull-down plugin, so it should be mentioned on the plugin pageLink Removed

I'll make a note to do that. Thanks for the info...I hadn't tried that before! --Duke33 15:15, 9 Jun 2005 (EDT)

Medley Chronology[edit]

-Something I've encountered (and saw coming) during my ventures into the chronology pages is the phenomenon of the medley. These songs have two chronologies from which to draw their history, yet when one clicks on its chronology link, it only lists the chronology of one of the songs. I've put together a page for Chronology:Doctor Worm / The Famous Polka (Live) as a separate page, not a redirect. I guess I'm asking for your input here. What do you think of it? Should the songs be listed by year (as they usually are) or by song (perhaps the first song's chron. on the top and the second song's on the bottom) or should this page simply be a type of disambiguation page with links to both song's chronology (see They Got Lost) [Now that I'm typing this up, this seems like the better idea]. Is this even a good idea? Any other ideas? I'll wait for a comment before I do any others.

As an aside; I noticed that it now takes two cartrige returns (Enter) for that lovely blank space between the table and the nav stub. --badqueso 01:08, 8 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Shows Glitch[edit]

I was enjoying the new shows search engine and I noticed a glitch which may or may not be a result of it. On this page the venue should be Slim's, and in some of the links to it it is correctly labeled. New strange problem... For the songs played at the first show, Shows/1982-08-?? (though at the moment it's a redirect since I can't move it back-- sorry about that), such as Cowtown, the song pages display that the "First Played" date was Jan. 1, 1970 while still linking directly to the right page. It has something to do with the question marks, I'm pretty sure, since when the oldest show date is changed to "Shows/1982-08" it goes right ahead to the next performance, and the page in any normal title-format makes it work fine. I have no idea how this thing even works, so it beats me. On the list things to do, it's not all that important since this is the only date with the ??'s in the title, but, I'm just confused as to why it's choosing "1-1-1970". New setlist thing - I don't know how long (could have been the last wiki update) this has been, but whatever you used to make the feature on Cowtown (Demo) show that Cowtown has been played x times now won't chop off the "(Demo)" part (so pages will say there's only been 1 live performance or often none). ~ magbatz 17:27, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Also, I just realized that any Show pages that link to a redirect (say, a show linking to Cage & Aquarium rather than Cage & Aquarium) doesn't get counted in the known performances in the song page. Hi there! I'm a longtime TMBG fan, but not very involved in the online fandom. I just stumbled upon your terrific site because I was looking for an spam-ad free lyrics resource to link to when quoting TMBG in a totally unrelated journal post...

What I was wondering is if your MediaWiki extensions for tracking concert histories are available for use on other wikis, under any sort of free licensing?

I have recently begun moving my hand-maintained chronology for another band into a Wikia site so that others can help with it, but even as an experienced Wikipedian I was daunted by the level of template wizardry that would be required to get some of the "database-like" capability that I was hoping for. Problems adding to cart[edit]

I added several songs as you requested. When I tested them (clicking on the Purchase button) they were added to the cart. But, when I "removed" the item from the cart, I could no longer add it (using the Purchase button). Clicking on Purchase would take me to the "Spine" page, but there is nothing in the cart. If I click on the "Add to Cart" button on the "Spine" page, it will add it to the cart. Not sure what's going on here. Can you take a look and see if you can reproduce the problem? -- Buzzmusic100 ("Keep your voice down...")

Yes, I've heard that MerchDirect has problems with some browsers...specifically Safari, i think. I haven't had problems on vista/xp on firefox or MSIE. --Duke33 19:56, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
I tried it with Firefox 3.6.6 and though sadly I see exactly the same problem. I'm running on a Mac (PPC OSX Tiger). Can you try the ones I added and see if they work for you? If so, I can add more songs, but you will have to verify them. -- Buzzmusic100 ("Keep your voice down...")
It works for me...So, maybe it's not a safari problem, as much as a Mac problem. That's probably what it is. If you're having problems removing items from your cart, you can always clear your cookies, and that should handle it, i think. --Duke33 21:14, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
We have a PC in the house running XP. I just tried it there using both Firefox and IE, and they both don't work. I tried "Au Contraire" as a test, and both failed to show up in the cart. Not sure what's going on. When I click on the "ADD TO CART" button, it shows up, but from the wiki, it doesn't. Even tried to reload the page and same problem. Any other ideas? I'm going to continue entering songs anyway...
Oh, i see what you mean, Buzz. Sorry, i misread what you said. We don't have a direct way to add it to your cart...so when you go to the page, it just links directly to the album. Your wiki[edit]

Hi Brad, I noticed that the "content" of TMBW is CC licensed but I'm considering building a wiki and wondered on how much of the structure/functions/templates I could adapt.

I run A Head Full of Wishes - a 16 year old site dedicated to Galaxie 500 (and Luna and Dean & Britta & Damon & Naomi) and am considering moving the PHP/MySQL bit of the site (discograpgy/gigography/lyrics/tab etc) that I've built over the years into a MediaWiki and what you have here is pretty close to what I aspire to!

It would certainly save me building from the ground up if I could make use of what you have (obv with credit and without completely ripping it off!!)

Thanks --Grange85 22:48, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

As far as the templates go, that shouldn't be a problem. But, as far as "structure" and "functions", can you elaborate a bit more? --Duke33 18:17, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Sorry it was a little vague - but partly because the idea is still germinating - for "structure" I suspect that it mostly already matches what I have - there's only so many ways you can get a discography/gigography presented so you can probably ignore that. For function I was sort of interested in how you are pulling in data from external resources e.g iTunes, Amazon, eMusic and the like - (and song ratings) - although I haven't really poked too closely to see. - sorry for being a bit vague - as I said it's still swimming around in my head half-baked atm. --Grange85 22:23, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Old Mediawiki Version[edit]

Hi. I looked at Special:Version and found that the wiki is on Mediawiki 1.25, ancient in terms of internet-facing software, enough that its excellence at parkour might be unexpected (at the age of 8 it comes as quite a surprise.)

I was wondering if there were any plans to update the wiki to a newer, more secure version.

Doubling this sentiment—on top of security vulnerabilities, there are also significant usage changes in terms of special pages and software quirks that would alienate both new and old editors to wikis alike. The main issue would be the heavily reliance on #var variables, which are fully deprecated at the latest by 1.40. TMBW has an extensive reliance, and a majority of templates would need to be remade or rewritten to still function. This may not be as bad as it seems, given that a lot are exceptionally bloated and outdated in performance anyway—better parser functions and lua are both plenty valuable options. I'd love to be able to move my maintenance project here forward, but often feel thwarted by an extremely outdated mediawiki and generally unreactive audience... Trig - 09:41, 20 October 2023 (EDT)

Git Repo for Some Wiki Code[edit]

Hi. I still notice that the wiki is running an antiquated MediaWiki version, and I know that transitioning all wiki code to a modern version will be torture, perhaps too difficult for one person. I was wondering if it would be possible to put some of the wiki code (bots, templates, themes, etc.) in a git repository so that if people (mainly me) ever get bored, they can try to iron out the issues of transitioning to a modern version like 1.39 LTS (supported into 2025). Thank you for your time in maintaining this wiki, especially fixing song ratings!
