Brooklyn Trio Sessions is a live-in-studio session recording released to members of the 2019 Instant Fan Club in January 2020.

The session was recorded and edited between November and December 2019. In IFC emails around that time, the band stated they were "taping some trio performances in the Brooklyn rehearsal space," and called the selections "some cool small format arrangements that should be showing up in the Quiet Storm section of the show sooner than later."

The seven-song performance featured They Might Be Giants in their Quiet Storm configuration: John Linnell playing accordion and keyboard, John Flansburgh playing acoustic and electric guitar, and Marty Beller playing an electronic drum pad.

The video recording was made available through a now-removed password-protected Vimeo upload on January 7, 2020, while an audio-only download was sent out on January 23.

"There Will Be Sad" made its very first appearance through this performance, only previously being mentioned through a December 2019 tweet about a different studio session. It would be over a year and a half before the song would be publicly released in its studio form on The Pamphlet EP in October 2021.

In December 2020, six out of seven songs from this performance were remastered for inclusion on Secret Music Vol. 1, with only "With The Dark" left out, as a similar version of the song is on that release.
