- March 20th heralds TMBG's fourth full-length album, Apollo 18. Three associated EPs (The Statue Got Me High, I Palindrome I and The Guitar (The Lion Sleeps Tonight)) are released throughout the year.
- Two live-action music videos are filmed for the album. The Statue Got Me High is shot in Los Angeles, while The Guitar is notable for being the first music video directed by John Flansburgh.
- NASA selects They Might Be Giants as "Musical Ambassadors" for International Space Year.
- In the summer, TMBG embarks on the Don't Tread On The Cut-Up Snake world tour, their first tour to feature a live backing band.
