Trivia/Info
- From the tmbg.com Q&A: "Gibson Montana very kindly built a left handed L1 acoustic model for me [Flans] for the John Henry recordings, and can be heard on 'Self Called Nowhere' and on 'Sleeping In The Flowers'."
- The drum fills at the climax of this song were a late addition from Brian Doherty during the recording sessions. Doherty recalls on the Don't Let's Start fan podcast, episode 27:
It was my feeling that it wasn't really there, but we recorded it anyway... We just did take after take after take, and at the end I remember thinking "Fuck everybody, I'm gonna black everybody out"—you could literally dial everybody out of your mix if you wanted—and I just totally went for it. I remember I could see Paul Fox's hand up through the glass, because he would stick up his hand which meant "Everybody shut the fuck up, don't ruin this take". And that meant it was a good take. I think that came out of Paul challenging me.
- Since 1998, the only live performances of this song were part of Quiet Storm sets in 2018 until its inclusion in John Henry theme shows in 2024.
- On TMBG Clock Radio, this song had a slightly altered mix, with the only difference being flange effects missing from the third chorus.
- Potentially a coincidence, the 1952 novel Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut mentions a "crazy neighbor who blew all his money on an electric organ."
