Trivia/Info

  • This song was first recorded in 2005 when John Linnell was challenged by activist lexicographer Erin McKean on The Next Big Thing to create a song using the almost-forgotten words contrecoup, craniosophic, and limerent in order for them to remain or be added to the dictionary[1]. When asked on the show if the song would ever be performed in concert, Linnell said: "Right now, [chances are] very slim. [But] I think the song has room for growth." The lyric "couched in terms no one knows" written for the bridge in The Else arrangement may be a direct reference to this challenge.
  • Phrenology is the 19th-century pseudoscientific belief that one's personality could be determined by the study of the location of bumps in the skull. McKean mentioned that craniosophic was another term for phrenology when explaining the word on The Next Big Thing.
  • The song's outro increases the tempo speed from around 115 BPM and ends at around 152 BPM. (Check yourself at http://convertalot.com/bpm.html). Compare with "Damn Good Times," "Gazing Out Toward" and "Mrs. Train," other varying tempo songs.
  • A alternate mix of this song was added to They Might Be Giants' Myspace profile on May 18, 2007, three days after the release of The Else. This mix includes the full outro with no fade out, extending the song's runtime to 3:32.
