Hello, I'm Gabagooblin! I love music! A few of my favorite bands (besides TMBG) are The Beatles, the Beatles solos, Electric Light Orchestra, The Doors, The Who, Pink Floyd, Carole King, Journey, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Logan Whitehurst and The Junior Science Club, Mono Puff, The Talking Heads, Moxy Fruvous, Weezer, Green Day, Third Eye Blind, The White Stripes, Metallica, Death Cab For Cutie, The Postal Service, Bright Eyes, and The Weakerthans! I like The Office, Walker Texas Ranger, John Flansburgh, the color green, the number fifty-seven, video games, skateboarding and giraffes. My favorite thing to do is play guitar. My favorite thing to eat is bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches. I am the coolest person I know.
Note: My user boxes are lying to you. I could never choose a favorite album, let alone a song or video.
How I Got Into Music[edit]
When I was maybe eleven, I watched this movie called Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 and it had quite possibly the greatest soundtrack ever. At the beginning of the movie, this little tree sapling fella named Groot is dancing along to Mr Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra while all these dudes are fighting this crazy goop monster thing in the background. As soon as that scene was over I had to look up that song. I got really really into ELO after that, and they're still one of my favorite bands today. From that movie's soundtrack, I branched off into other stuff which kept branching and branching and eventually evolved into the mess of a music taste that I have today. It's totally insane to think that if I'd never watched that one movie, I probably wouldn't be on this site right now.
How I Got Into TMBG[edit]
Ever since I started listening to music I've shared it with my friends, one of which got into music too. We would exchange music every day. One day, his dad showed TMBG to him, which is when he sent Birdhouse In Your Soul to me. This must've been early 2024 because I remember I was only a fan for a few months when Lazy was released. Anyways, Birdhouse freaked me out, but in a cool way I guess cause I was totally hooked. They Might Be Giants was unlike anything I'd seen or heard. The way They danced and the props They used in Their videos were so ironically awesome. Their songs were flat out strange and seemed so fun. They were weird, and I loved that. (Also, I thought Flans was just about the prettiest guy I'd ever seen. Linnell is pretty high up on my list of pretty people, too.)
About My Music Collection[edit]
I'm a pretty avid music collector, I have more music than I have space for in my room. Sadly, I only have one TMBG album. I'd love to get more but unfortunately I'm broke and TMBG isn't very common in used music shops. I found a 1986 copy of Pink when I went to House of Guitars in Rochester, New York during their 60th anniversary celebration. I paid $49.98 for that dumb record. Way too much for it skipping on Puppet Head and Don't Let's Start. But anyways Armand Schaubroeck was very kind and gave my dad and I a tour of the whole place and told us some great stories. When I asked him about They Might Be Giants, he said he'd helped Them with a show They'd performed in the city once and got to spend some time talking with Them. It was so cool to hear about Them, he said They were great guys. I totally recommend that place if you're ever around.
Concerts I've Been To[edit]
The first concert I ever went to was Journey during their freedom tour in 2024. ToTo opened for them. It was so awesome. The second concert I went to was a Bon Jovi tribute band called Don Jovi. (The frontman's name was Don.) My grandma and I were in the nosebleeds, it was so much fun. The third concert I went to was Paul McCartney on the Got Back tour. It was seriously the best, I cried a ton. I don't know if I'll ever be as happy as I was that day again in my entire life. I haven't seen TMBG yet, but I plan to someday. I was hoping to see them on The Bigger Show Tour but unfortunately I'm underage. I guess I'm okay with that though because I genuinely cannot comprehend that they actually exist. Seeing them in real life might give me a heart attack or a stroke or something.
I Play Instruments![edit]
I picked up guitar the same year I started listening to TMBG. My dad took me to Guitar Center for my twelfth birthday and bought me a blue Epiphone Les Paul Special starter pack or whatever it's called. It came with a crappy amp and a travel bag. It was so awesome. I chose a Les Paul shape because I wanted to be like Jeff Lynne. At that point I'd been playing the flute for about two years, so it wasn't all that hard to start another instrument. I've become pretty alright for being self taught. A year after starting guitar, my parents got me an ocean turquoise Fender strat for Christmas. I chose that one because it reminded me a bit of Rivers Cuomo's guitar. I got a midnight blue Fender precision bass for my fourteenth birthday, which I've gotten pretty good at. I started teaching myself to play my little sister's keyboard recently, which I've become decent at. I'm saving up for an accordion next! My dream is to be in a totally rocking band, I pray to the rock gods every day to send me totally rocking band mates.
Band Related Things I do[edit]
I've been in band since fourth grade. (For context I'm in eighth grade.) I play the flute even though I hate it. I joined marching band in sixth grade with my best friend, we were of the three sixth graders who were asked to join that year. We thought we were so cool and special but turns out we were just starting our journeys as losers before everyone else. I've been in jazz band since seventh grade, in which I play guitar and bass. You could classify me as a "band kid", but I'd rather you didn't. I enjoy being in band, making music with people is what I'm most passionate about, but the kids who make DCI and band camp their whole personality are the worst. I am not in the same category as them.
(Funny?) Story[edit]
On Thursdays in homeroom we have music appreciation where a student can recommend a song to have the class listen to. I'm pretty close with the teacher of that class, we share a lot of the same taste in music. He likes TMBG so I recommended that he play some for music appreciation. I asked for Don't Let's Start because that's basically my go-to song and I thought people might like it, and he decided he'll play Istanbul too since that's his favorite. He pulled up Don't Let's Start on Youtube, and to my shock and horror, he played the music video on the board for everyone to see. I love that video with all of my heart, but man was I clowned on. That was a terrible experience. TMBG is not for everyone; People didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I'd hoped. But the teacher and I were vibing so it was okay. Then he played the Istanbul music video and people thought that was weird too but it wasn't as bad. Overall it was pretty fun, I would recommend it.
My Favorite Photo of The Johns At The Moment[edit]
I love this picture because Flans looks so cool (and dorky) with his awesome Chessmaster, and then Linnell is sitting next to him looking like a farmer from a horror game or something.
